Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton Out Today!

Jodi Linton’s Pretty Reckless hits shelves today, and I’m thrilled to share the news. You guys are going to LOVE Deputy Laney Briggs!

PrettyRecklessHighRes_final coverPretty Reckless by Jodi Linton

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.

Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless, but she’s turned herself around—she’s respectably engaged and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case.

Laney will be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf and her chance at a quiet, contented life. His seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido was only outdone by her constant urge to butt heads with him. But when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help.

Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but Laney has always been pretty reckless…

Pretty Reckless (Deputy Laney Briggs #1)Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jodi Linton debuts with deputy sheriff Laney Briggs in her mystery Pretty Reckless.
In Laney, Linton has created a heroine who isn’t afraid of being toughly feminine in a world of men.
You know Laney is something different when you read this description of who she is: I’d pieced my heart back together and salvaged what little dignity I had left by jumping back in the saddle with a man safer than a Katherine Heigl chick flick. Unfortunately for me, old wounds can be a bitch the same way straying cowboys can be heartbreakers.
Even though the book opens with a murder, it would be easy to believe Pretty Reckless would join the ranks of countless Texas mysteries with aw shucks investigators stumbling onto clues that miraculously lead to answers in the “who done it” tome. It would be easy to make that mistake because Linton has fun with her character descriptions and nails the small Texas town vernacular.
It would be easy, but it would be so wrong. Pretty Reckless is fun and funny, but it’s also dark and gritty. Think Fargo set in small town Texas and you’ve got the feel of this book.
Linton takes risks in her debut, committing some cardinal sins in the romantic suspense genre. I won’t say more about that, but I will say trust the author. She makes it work. Not only does she make it work, she makes her readers route for Laney Briggs and the multiple cowboys in her life: the best friend veteran turned drunk, the one night stand, the former love or the current mistake.
Pretty Reckless delivers across multiple genres. Linton has created a book lovers of mysteries, westerns and romantic suspense will enjoy.

I received an advanced reader copy of Pretty Reckless in exchange for an honest review of the work.

That moment when…

I added Within Temptation to my current WIP playlist. Within Temptation is a mainstay of my Sharlene Gallagher book playlists. It instantly pulled me from the book mid-scene. Won’t do that again. Music is powerful stuff.

I’ve rushed this book. The plot is all kinds of crazy. Good thing it’s the crappy first draft. If I can whip this cold from hell into shape I can finish the first draft this weekend, I think. If I can’t whip the cold into shape I’m going to be an unhappy camper. I’ll share my unhappiness here, I’m sure.

Speaking of unhappy and cold, it’s going to be 12 here in two days. It was 80 today.

To end on a happy note, a fellow teacher gave me a GREAT gift today. I can’t wait to get it framed and hanging in my house. It’s the second gift of art I’ve gotten this week. I love my job and the people I work with. ❤

Jodi Linton Guest Post

I’m so excited to have Jodi Linton here today. Jodi was my student years ago. Her writing always had so much voice. I wasn’t surprised at all when I heard she’d signed with Entangled Publishing! I can’t wait to read her Laney Briggs series starting in March.–MB

Cowgirl with red bootsI wanted to say, thank you Mary Beth, for having me on your blog!

I’m often asked how I came up with my series…

For the most part, the series started out with a brainstorming session with my husband. As I was in the middle of writing a manuscript (which will never see the light of day) I hit a wall and decided to trash the project until I could find my writing muse again. In the end, my husband suggested that I should write what I knew, and that was…Texas. My inner cheerleader wanted to shake her pom-poms when the name Laney Briggs popped into my head.

After that, it all sort of fell into place. I grew up in a small town, knew the language, and within days I knew who my protagonist would be.  When I was done I had myself a sassy female sheriff deputy whose sharp tongue could outwit any hunky cowboy.

I will be releasing with Ignite an Entangled Imprint in March 2014.

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows the one rule of thumb, secrets only last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.

Laney Briggs has a pretty sweet job as a deputy in her sleepy hometown of Pistol Rock, Texas. Everything’s fine and dandy until her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots in Pistol Rock’s first murder case. The troublesome cowboy’s rugged good looks and T-shirt straining muscles have always left Laney in hot water. As the body count starts to rise in her small town, Laney is forced to ask the lethal bad boy for help.

Divine Dining FREE! Guest Post by Janet Brown

I’m thrilled to have my good friend Janet on the blog today! Her book Divine Dining: 365 Devotions to Guide You to Healthier Weight and Abundant Wellness is free on Amazon now. –MB

DivineDiningCover 8-7-13 copyThe National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2004 tells us 133.6 million (66%) adult Americans are obese or overweight. I heard on TV the other day that the percent has risen now to 72% of adult Americans.

A Purdue University study indicates conservative churches such as southern Baptists, Assembly of God, and Church of God fight this battle most often. Richard Kreider of Baylor University gives further insight into this. These denominations “avoid dancing, tobacco, and alcohol, but give no guidelines for overeating.” He goes on to say our churches more often attract with food, not action events.

From my own true story, I can say that though I gave my heart to God at age seven and attended church regularly, compulsive overeating almost ruined my life. I teetered on the brink of suicide and divorce for several years. Praise God, He gave me an emotional and spiritual healing in time.

Even if you don’t suffer from compulsive overeating to the point where it almost ruins your life like I did, still unhealthy eating habits can slow you down and diminish your witness.

Divine Dining: 365 Devotions to Guide You to Healthier Weight and Abundant Wellness inspires compulsive overeaters to rely on God for their true spiritual nourishment day by day. One woman’s journey to healing leads the way.

Here’s one of the devotions from Divine Dining:September 11

254. My Do It Myself

“For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” Isaiah 41:13

My oldest daughter and son-in-law bought an inside basketball goal for our first grandchild, their niece. We put it away and brought it out for each one thereafter. By the time, my third and youngest grandchild was born, the basketball goal was worn, but still usable. The pen that held it to a certain height kept getting lost, so I hid it. My grandson loved that goal. By age two, he was wise to my tricks of hiding the pen. He’d drag the whole contraption into the living area and say “pen,” indicating I should get the lost part. He would take it from my hands and say, “My do it myself.”

He would aim and miss several times. I’d say, “let Mimi do it.” But no, “my do it myself.” In God-given grandma wisdom, I covered his right hand with mine and guided the pen into the hole. His eyes lit up. Then, he swatted away my hand and reaffirmed, “my do it myself.”

What a picture of us at times. We’re taught to be independent. When faced with a compulsion we can’t control, we argue with ourselves saying, “I’m an accomplished, capable, intelligent woman. I can get on a diet, stay on it and control this thing.” But, we try and try, and can’t. No matter how many times we tell God with our actions and words, “my do it myself,” we can’t.

Finally, God holds our right hand and puts the pieces together. But, do we still shake His hand away and say, “my do it myself.” We can’t. God help us. We never can.

Prayer: When I try to walk in my own power, remind me of my grandson slapping away my hand. God, I need You to hold my right hand.

What I’ve Been Doing

August 2013

August 2013

NEW! Sign up for my newsletter. The newsletter won’t come out more than once a month, it’s delivered straight to your email, and it will include all the information for my new releases so you don’t miss them. The subscription form is located on the top right column of the blog above my avatar, or you can click on the link above.

The last week has been one HUGE writing push. I’ve finished the copy edits for Sharlene Gallagher, Book 2: An Angel Earns Her Wings, and I’ve finished a round of edits on one of my romances. I’ve started the repackaging process on my print books, and I’ve made some business decisions.

I never really looked at my writing as a business, and that was a huge mistake.

Thank goodness for industry professionals like Kristen Lamb whose WANA blog helped me see the light. No more writing under three names. My YA and Inspirationals will now be published under the name Mary Beth Lee. The romances will continue under Liz Lee. I can handle publicity for two, but three…no way.

I’m working on a business plan now thanks to The Indie Voice book, The Naked Truth About Self-Publishing. If you are self-published and looking at your writing as simply craft OR you’re interested in self-publishing, get this book first. The Indie Voice authors walk you through their plan step-by-step, and the information is invaluable.

I’m working on increasing my word count thanks to the inspiration of critique partner Karen Kelley and The Artist’s Way challenger/former student/current colleague Scotty Coppage.

It’s been an interesting 18 months. Our empty house filled up, we built a house, we got a dog (and I love her so much) and our full house emptied. In the midst of that, I wrote, but I wrote into the mists with no real plan. That’s changed now. More on that later. I’ve got work to do, so I’m signing off!

First Book Trailer! #MyWANA

Dead Girl WalkingThe next Sharlene Gallagher adventure releases Tuesday, Aug. 13. For now, check below for this awesome book trailer created by Karl Kelley for book 1: Dead Girl Walking!

Grab Dead Girl Walking kindle format now. It’s only .99. The paperbacks are being repackaged right now, but I’ll let you know when they’re ready.

As always, please leave a review on Amazon if you’ve read the book. Reviews are the top way indie authors get word out about their books.

Accidents, THE END plus give-aways coming soon #MyWANA

One of the bags responsible for snapping my shoulder out of place. Ouchy.

One of the bags responsible for snapping my shoulder out of place. Ouchy.

As I’ve stated a million times before, I am the klutziest person I know. I mean I injured myself with my purse. I’m seeing a chiropractor now. His first order of business was snapping my shoulder back in place. Yes, it hurt as bad as it sounds.

Today, he started work on my neck. Somehow, I got a paper cut on my ELBOW on the FACE paper they put down on the chiropractor table. Blood everywhere. I freaked the poor guy out pretty good. I have no idea how I got the paper cut on my elbow. This ranks up there with the time I got a yearbook box paper cut on my knee. Ouch.

Injuries didn’t stop me from writing, though.

I finished the draft of Sharlene Book 3 last night! Book 2 releases next month (finally!!!). That means I’ll be hosting give-aways soon. Watch the blog for more info. If you don’t know who Sharlene is, let me share. Once upon a time Sharlene was a teen scream movie queen, aka horror film actress. But then she was bludgeoned to death. Now she’s back as a guardian angel. In book 1, Dead Girl Walking, Sharlene has to solve her murder before her killer strikes again. The novels are campy mysteries, and they’re tons of fun. I’ll talk about books 2 and 3 later. All I can say is poor Sharlene. She’s had a tough year. The Dead Girl Walking video trailer created by Karl Kelley will be out soon. I can’t wait to share it with y’all!

Have an awesome day!
